Lisa Carter-Bawa, PhD, MPH, APRN, ANP-C, FAAN, FSBM has received the Sara J. Knight Service Award from the Society of Behavioral Medicine’s (SBM) Health Decision Making and Communication Special Interest Group.
The service award was presented at the SBM’s recent annual meeting in Chicago.
Through its presentation, the SBM honored Dr. Carter-Bawa—founding director of the Cancer Prevention Precision Control Institute (CPPCI) at the Hackensack Meridian Center for Discovery and Innovation (CDI), and deputy associate director of Community Outreach and Engagement for Georgetown’s Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center—for her exceptional and sustained contributions, planning and leadership within their special interest group’s scientific and professional community.
“Dr. Carter-Bawa is a conscientious and driven researcher,” said David Perlin, Ph.D., chief scientific officer and executive vice president of the CDI. “Her passionate work through the CPPCI continues to be of great impact to clinical care, evoking societal change in real-time for the community.”
As a longtime behavioral scientist and CDI research faculty member, her work is centered on improving patient-centered care, especially in complex cancer screening decisions.
"This award recognizes her outstanding service and meaningful contributions to the field of health decision making and communication—an area that is at the core of her work,” noted one colleague. “Her research has consistently focused on helping patients navigate complex screening decisions, reducing stigma, and improving access to clear, patient-centered information to support informed choices. This recognition also reflects her longstanding commitment to advancing equity, communication, and patient-centered care."
Dr. Carter-Bawa's research, particularly on mitigating the stigma associated with lung cancer screening, has been instrumental in advancing health equity.
“Her innovative approach and dedication have made a significant impact on patient care and public health,” said Dr. Perlin. ”The CDI congratulates Dr. Carter-Bawa on this well-deserved honor.”
